Kim Carpenter - The Dream Show ( in & around A Midsummer Night's Dream )
ARTIST STATEMENT
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
I am a visual storyteller both in the visual and the performing arts.
I work instinctively from my imagination. Through my mind’s eye I collect images from my daily life and adapt or subvert them into whatever stories or themes I am currently exploring.
With A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I am Inspired by the ambiguity of Shakespeare's Dream Forest - with its mercurial fairies, mysterious insects and devious beasts who play hosts to the drug-induced lovers - overseen by the devilish Puck under the command of Oberon, King of The Fairies. It is a world enhanced by magic where time and space do not exist and is open to interpretation. Pure gold to the imagination.
Two previous personal experiences of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream have also informed my choices for this exhibition.
- 1970 – Attended rehearsals of Peter Brook's famous production of A Midsummer Night's Dream as a student of The Sadler's Wells Post-Graduate Design Course in London.
- 1985 - Directed and designed a controversial production for Nimrod starring Hugo Weaving as Oberon.
