Alexandra Mills - Coastal Walk

Coastal Walk - an exhibition of work made during a residency on Sydney’s northern beaches

In a year working on Sydney’s coastal fringe, the sunbleached colours of the sea, sky and vegetation have crept into the work I was making with found materials formed by wind and weather. The resulting small-scale works reflect chance observations of coastal life: cliffs and headlands, clouds on the horizon and above the plateau, trees that huddle together as one in a mesh of banksia, casuarina and eucalypt, the beachside park where their twigs fall along with the sheaths from palm trees and couples stand to talk or walk together.

The works in this exhibition are a sample of a body of work in several media made during a 12-month residency at the Avalon Creative Space from October 2021, awarded by the Northern Beaches Council.
