Nicholas Burton - Stadium Primitive - sketches

This work is influenced by ideas from an old dilapidated chinese stadium, to the movie Melancholia & Sir Richard Burtons Anatomy of Melancholy. The old stadium was once the largest public space in what was then a small town. It is now a rundown empty space in line for demolition. Its design & position made it an important organ of life in the city, however, it is now an ossified, bare, windswept & very forgotten piece of history. No longer a public gathering place it is more like an abandoned temple of solitude & contemplation. Our new private spaces are complex & busy with movement, progress & social interaction but nearly all delivered in a virtual space. The stadium primitive sketches are the ideas & spaces left behind.
